My niece has twice sent me an invite to join Upromise. I don't know why this offends me, but it does. Perhaps if it didn't seem like such a chore for her to answer an email. Or that she reached this way once in a while with something other than the monthly Target photo salon pictures (and I use "salon" loosely). Right now if there was anyone I'd want to help save for college, it would be my Godson. Someone I know and like (and he seems to like me back).
Mom made it safely to Grand Rapids today in a timely manner. Whew.
I just came from the grocery store. When I was checking out, the male cashier said, "Ummm, you're cheating," as he swiped my Betty Crocker Warm Delights Molten Chocolate Cake. I'm pretty sure that as soon as the words came out of his mouth he wished he could get them back. According to whom?, I asked.
I know I have bitched about my weight here, but I'm working on that. But it's hard when everyone assumes someone of a certain size, or even the fact that you are a woman, means you're on a diet.
If I go out to eat with a group and order a salad, I hate it when someone says, "Oh, you're being so good." Well, actually, I just wanted a salad.
I've been working at eating what I want when I want it. It seems to be working as I'm not overeating or binging (I'm not even sure if that's the right word). I'm down five pounds since I started running and I've been eating like I mentioned, so I am doing something ok.
Friday night I went to a high school football game. My second in as many weeks. I'm a fan of the band. A ninth grade flutist anyway. So her brother and I went to that game while the rest of the family went to another game to root for the cousin running for Homecoming King. Good thing they went, cause he won!
I digress. So there were two things that struck me at this game. One was the school pride as worn in attire, mums, fake tattoos and hair colors. This is not a rich school. Or a popular school. But lots of school pride. It made me proud of them. I never saw so many creative homemade t-shirts to tout school pride. Made me want one. But we were on the "Home" side even though we were with the "Guest" team because we wanted to see the band play to us.
The second thing was the number of pregnant girls. By that I mean high school students. Big tummies, beginning tummies, infants and toddlers. Baby mommas having babies everywhere. And yes, there were a few baby daddies walking around too. So proud. New baby outfits. Lots of attention. Hugs. Pictures.
It made me sad. So many baby mommas don't finish school. Or go to college. Or have a fighting chance to break the cycle so that their babies lead a different life.
I did my usual volunteer thing Saturday morning before spending the rest of the day in a “retreat” with the Animal Defense League. This is our third session this year. We just need to set some goals and get on with it already.
Yesterday after lunch, we checked out my niece’s registry at Bed, Bath & Beyond. I think we are going to get a gift card from there for them.
Then we watched The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada. It’s a Tommy Lee Jones flick. I enjoyed it, but was confused by the ending.
My nephew-in-law to-be has decided he will wear long pants after all. It looks like we’ll have lunch after the ceremony at Macaroni Grill. Mom wants to pay for it. I told her that her parents ought to pay for it as the “reception.” She spoke with them last night and they told her lunch with be dutch treat. Class act, no?
This morning I started wondering if they are going to have a wedding cake. So I did some research and found a nice bakery. I sent her a link and offered to take care of it. After all, how big/costly can a cake for 10-12 attendees be? Yes, we’re up from the original seven!
I’ll be interested to see if she takes me up on it or if she mentions it to her parents and they step up. Otherwise the kids are paying for everything. Yes, I recognize that after a certain age, it’s ok to pay for it yourself . . . but still . . . they can afford to contribute something more than just their presence.
Dammit. I hate it when I miss one. 😉
Friday night mom and I had dinner with my nephew and one of his buddies. They're in town working for a subcontractor who is doing work here for Landry's (they own more restaurants than you think).
Lee is 26 now. Bejezus that makes me feel old. He's never had much direction in life. High school drop-out. And oy, you should see his teeth. Disgusting and heartbreaking at the same time.
At heart I know he is a good kid. I just wish he could find himself. Everytime I see him, I nag about getting his GED. So I asked again on Friday. He told me he passed. I told him I was proud of him for following through.
His friend Ray seems like a good kid too (pretty cute too!). Level-headed. Well, except that he's 28 and working on his second divorce. Anyway, I hope he keeps Lee on the straight and narrow. I was glad to hear that he doesn't like Lee's girlfriend either.
Saturday I helped mom load cans into our cars to take in for recycling. She donates the money to the missionary league at the church. Unfortunately we got there too late and the line was too long (it was almost time for Antonio's ballgame). So now I have a car load of cans because I have a boat in my driveway and can't get to the garage (Duwayne's boat — doesn't fit in his driveway).
Antonio pitched his first game. I thought he did a terrific job. He also received a gold award at school on Friday for what I guess is like his GPA. His lowest grade this year was a 93. If only he were nicer to his mom . . .
His sister had a game too, just in the evening (thank goodness, because his game at 11a was blazing hot). Her team won, so it was an exciting game. Gina got a couple of hits for RBIs. His season is over now, but she has a few more games.
Today I've mostly been at home working. I brought my laptop home to see if I could get a jump on this project I am working on. I need to merge 77 documents into one so I can make a table of contents. Thing is, there are a variety of sections and some of the same documents are in multiple sections. I'm at 254 pages now, with probably about 100 more needing adding. :-O
